what if OS X ran on top of the Linux kernel

I was reading John Siracusa’s comments on the recent speculations about a possible kernel change in Apple OS X’s next upgrade release, codenamed Leopard.

John specifically rules out the possibility of adopting Linux as a kernel, primarily for license reasons. I am very aware of these objections, as I was before these rumours: after all, that’s why BSD was chosen in the first place. Moreover, even if it was possible, I’m not that convinced that it would be a good move for Apple.

Anyway, I can’t help asking myself what if.

What would it take technically to wrap around the GPL (without breaking its terms, that’s understood), how could it possibly work? Would it be good for users, for Apple in the long run? And ultimately, would it be good for me?

I’m afraid I don’t have an answer to these questions, except to the last one.

A couple of days ago one of my customers asked me if I could find him a notebook. The only precise requirement he came up with was 128MB of video RAM. I thought it was quite unusual from someone with quite average computer knowledge.

But that was before I realized this.

The unbelievable, apparently unlimited amount of pain some people can take never ceases to amaze me. But something changed from yesteryear: now I think they deserve it.

Go, Microsoft.

Ken Livingstone, the mayor of London, recently gave his fellow citizens some advice on how to waste less water. One of these suggestions was about refraining from flushing the toilet if you have had only “a pee”.

Talking about personal choice, I know someone who recently developed this very habit (without their mayor’s suggestion, I believe), so I can tell you out of experience that I find it very annoying at least. Saving water is undoubtedly a noble goal, but there has got to be a better, nicer and healthier way.

So in the last couple of months I’ve been trying to figure out a smart and efficient way to recycle “white” water from the basin to charge the toilet flush.

Any good ideas?

Se c’Ã¨ gente che guarda questa roba, e l’unica cosa certa Ã¨ che sono in tanti a farlo, non c’Ã¨ affatto da stupirsi che il nostro paese vada a rotoli. Semmai la domanda da farsi, e magari la chiave per una tanto improbabile quanto necessaria inversione di tendenza, Ã¨ quale sia la misteriosa ragione per cui non vanno ancora peggio… ma diamo tempo al tempo.

Intanto io oggi ho deciso: basta. Piuttosto mangio da solo.
