The (not so) usual insightful comment on Slashdot, about the big news of these days: Apple’s migration to Intel.
Of all the speculations I’ve read during these days, and it’s a whole lot of them, this seems the most likely to happen.
Now, who am I not to share my own opinion on the matter?
We all know that OS X will do just fine regardless of the processor’s ISA. Every sane geek just knew that Apple was running OSX on Intel inside the house; if not for any other reason, just because they could. I believe that Apple has sound reasons to switch to Intel; time will tell us exactly what they are, but the easy guess is that all of them are tied to business factors.
I also believe that they traded diversity for business and I have a strong feeling that this can’t be a good thing in the long term. I can’t help but think that someone took another bite, and now the Apple looks a lot like a dumped core.
Then again, maybe this evil move was necessary and Apple will be successful in the end.
I must confess I’m not a big fan of Apple the corporation. They still haven’t got me (and many others) convinced on their F/OSS practices, for a start. But OS X makes me drool, they make cool hardware, and uncle Steve rocks, I wonder if he has a daughter. All in all, I like them a lot more than their competition, so, good luck…!
